Hey everyone in MD and DC! If you get a chance head to the Corcoran Gallery in DC. There's an awesome exhibit going on until Feburary 12, 2012 called 30 Americans. I worked with artist Hank Willis Thomas and did costuming for some of the images featured in the exhibit (the one above + a few more). The work of a lot of really great artists is featured in the show (to name a few: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Nick Cave, David Hammons, Kara Walker and Gary Simmons). Go check it out!

6 months off...Sort of

I took an unplanned six months off from blogging I simply got too wrapped up in my personal life and work to blog. I'm back and ready to share again...to start here's six awesome things that happened in the last six months...

1. I went to LA for the first time and styled a series of web commercials for SYFY

2. I spent my summer as assistant costume designer on a movie called Robot & Frank- scheduled to release next year.

3. I styled mannequins on a Target commercial with a famous guest designer...you'll see :)

4. I worked on a kids show called Team Umizoomi on Nick Jr. and they put me (and my headwrap) in the show. Episode will be showing next summer!

5. I saw Prince perform for the first time at the Forum in Inglewood y'all (Thanks for the photo RJ!)

6. I went to Phoenix, Arizona and saw the desert for the first time!

The work of Eiko Ishioka: Another reason why I love Japan

Its no secret that I love Japan and have many friends in Tokyo that I consider family. The tragedy in Japan has me thinking about two things mainly. One is how I can help (more on that later), the other is why I love Japan and why the preservation of Japan is important to the world. I was having a conversation with my really good friend in Tokyo via gchat and we were talking about the damage the natural disaster has done to Japan and we both started feeling so sad. Then she changes the subject and starts talking to me about how she saw a documentary about Eiko Ishioka. "Do you know who she is?" "Yes I replied I've seen her book at Borders. Her work is so inspiring!" I then start googling images of her work and getting really excited about my new theory:

The preservation of Japan is important to the world because of artists like Eiko Ishioka.

Eiko is a 72 year old oscar winning costume designer, who has worked with artists such as Bjork and Grace Jones. She's an accomplished director, production designer and costume designer who works in advertising, Broadway and film. She graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Some of her best known works are:

Bram Stoker's "Dracula" 1992

(which she won the Oscar for Best Costumes).

She directed the music video for Björk's Cocoon in 2002.

Costume Designer for the movie "The Cell" 2000.

Costumes for Grace Jone's "Hurricane" Tour 2009

And most recently costume designer for
"Spiderman: Turn-Off the Dark" 2010

Eiko's work and creativity was cultivated in Japan. Her artistic expression and consistent use of horror themes I believe are as a result of living through the second World War and the tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (Merely my personal assumption and observation). It is important that the world do all we can to help the next generation of Japanese creatives to come out of Japan. Their artistic expression is sure to be shaped by their own experiences and it is necessary for the world to see their art!

Fashion Week Wrap-Up

Fashion week ended last Thurs (at least for me in NYC). I worked backstage at 15 shows including, Simon Spurr, Jill Stuart, and BETSEY JOHNSON! I saw Kanye West at Rodarte...but I missed the show :/. I went to several independent designer shows, Style 360, NY Fashion Connect and Lois Eastlund. I ran into old friends and made some new ones. I got high off of oxygen and drank more Izze then I could stand (grapefruit flavor only yum). I got free makeup courtesy of Maybelline and Make up Forever. Oh and I got free sunglasses courtesy of Polaroid!

Learning New Things

During winter session I took a patternmaking course everyday at FIT. It took up most of my time and I did not have a chance to blog. I'm back and wanted to share with you my final project.

For this I sketched an original design, did a draft of a pattern, traced the pattern from the draft and then cut and assembled the dress:

Well 1/2 of a dress (as per FIT requirements). Lol.

The theme was Coney Island and the dress was based on the lines and color of this building:

I learned a lot about patternmaking and myself through the course of this month. I learned how hard I can work and how many great ideas I have! Now I'm glad to have more technical knowledge to support them :)

One of my biggest regrets is I didn't go see Kabuki while in Tokyo. So I have been induldging little by little on YouTube. (God bless YouTube). I came across Bandō Tamasaburō V he's a male Kabuki actor that specializes in female roles. I started looking at Kabuki for the costumes and then found Tamasaburō and was mesmorized by his performances.

I'm desperately hoping a Kabuki tour comes to NYC soon. The last time was the Heisei Nakamuraza troupe in 2007. If you're in Cali the Zenshinza company is performing in the Bay Area next month: http://www.calperfs.berkeley.edu/performances/2010-11/theater/ztc.php.

After having a twitter conversation with @PurpleDistrict I decided to do a new collage and post on Fall 2010 trends. If you haven't noticed Army green and leopard print are blazing hot this season. And all over the place its almost overwhelming! Sometimes army green can seem drab as hell so...drumroll...

I did a collage to brighten up army green (and fall sheesh) by using another popular color -- coral! I also decided to through purple into the mix because its my favorite color! I think that army green is almost a staple color like brown or black, it can go with almost any color.

As your wearing army green and leopard this season don't be afraid to mix other colors with it! I like to see various yellows (from sunny to mustard) and grays with army green. And don't be afraid to mix brown and black pieces! Learn the art of coordinating (not over matching) through experimenting and trying things different ways.

I was at NYC Comic Con yesterday and saw a video by 2NE1 and immediately thought they were the cutest group I've ever seen. More interesting fashion & race controversy brought to you this time by Mario Epanya (I'm on a roll two posts in a row). Mario Epanya is a Cameroon born and Paris based fashion photographer. He did a series of photoshoots in order to pitch Vogue Africa magazine to Conde Nast. Conde Nast is the publisher of Vogue and many many other publications (including the New Yorker and Wired).

What was Conde Nast's reasoning? I've heard rumors of them blaming the internet and magazine sales being down. That doesn't seem like good reasoning to me, since Italian Vogue's Black Issue flew off the shelves in 2008. So everyone is outraged and claiming that Vogue is indeed racist. My question is why do we need Vogue to make an African magazine? This Day (an African publisher) publishes Arise Magazine quarterly. Arise magazine centers on African fashion, music and culture. This Day saw a need in the market and filled it. I think that everyone who is so outraged and focused on convincing Vogue to for lack of better terms "let us have a magazine" should focus all of that energy into starting your own. John H. Johnson started Ebony in 1945 because there were no magazines that addressed black American culture. 60+ years later the magazine is still in publication.

Lesson: Stop waiting for people to give you opportunities. Make your own. I hope that Mario continues his work and starts his own 'zine.

The Colour of Beauty

Renee Thompson is a model trying to make it into NY Fashion week, with 10 years of experience modeling all over the world, a beautiful portfolio and drive she continues to struggle because of her skin color. (http://www.nfb.ca/film/colour_of_beauty)

I was sent this video by a friend and it really struck me. Read my email response:

"I have worked fall and spring NY fashion week shows since fall 2008. There are several things here that I have seen and know from working backstage.

1. There is a tendency to use 1 or 2 Dominican models (It seems being black and exotic is trendy over being "regular" and latinas are working more than blacks from what I've seen)
2. There is a tendency to use mostly white brazilian models and models from the Ukraine
3. There is a tendency to use 1 Asian model
4. There is 1 or 2 African-Candian or African-American models. (usually Chanel Iman)
5. Alek wek looking models are starting to be phased out

The only show that I attended (not worked) that had a lot of black models was the ARISE Magazine show this past Spring (African Fashion Mag). Every working black model was in that show.

Now where does it start? Who's to blame. I really believe we designers are largely to blame. I know that when I have shows I purposely choose models that aren't the industry standard. While I'm not big enough yet to make an impact, I will continue to do this. My hope and dream is to have many fashion week shows that isn't labled "African" that features mostly black, latina, native american, Indian and Asian models. Because they are constantly stealing our flyness and remixing it for old and oddly shaped (mostly white) women and selling it for $1000s. Do you know how trends start? Trend spotting agencies travel the world and take photos of US. Then take those photos and make mood boards and presentations for designers. Think of all the "ethnic" trends there have been recently. Come y'all can steal from people of color all over the world and those people can't be apart of the presentation? Fashion is one of the many venues that helps the masses to embrace imperialism. When Britain was occupying India, having silk was such a status symbol. Not a coincidence. I can go on and on but just know that I'm working to chance the industry from within. It may take my whole life but I will keep at it.

The meaning of my name is "Boi" meaning first born and Nepor meaning comfort. Its of West African origin.

What exactly do you design?

I design everything. Whatever you carry I want to be responsible for designing. Luggage, Dog Carriers, Laptop Cases, Handbags, Wallets, the list goes on.

What are you influenced by, What inspires you to design?

I'm influenced by things all around me, people, places and things. Local inspirations that resign ate globally. Making the ordinary extraordinary.

What experience(s) have you had?

I have had experience as an intern and industry fashion stylist for Music Videos, Editorials, Fashion Shows, and Award Shows. I've also had special art classes since 3rd grade. (Boi'Nepor is an FIT Alum NY, NY).

Who is your favorite Designer and why?

Alexander McQueen (R.I.P), because what he did was limitless [and an] "outside the box" couture vision. What he has done throughout his career I can only dream of accomplishing.

What Inspired you to get involved in fashion?

Fashion was the only outlet where I could be and do what I wanted creatively my way, with no "middle men" influences, fashion is the one venue where you can exemplify to the world exactly what you want the world to receive, that to me is priceless, regardless of the design process and its deadlines.

I attended the presentation by Lorick on Sunday featuring hats by Leah C. Check out a lil' video of the event

Fitting Photos

The collection was sophisticated and elegant. I love the use of emerald green in this collection (its not a color that we see very often anymore). The use of pleating on the cocktail dresses was so dainty and feminine. I loved the mix of tweeds, metallic fabrics and silks. The collection conjured up images of womenswear silhouettes from 1940s and 70s. To say the hats by Leah C were works of art is an understatement. I was in awe of Leah C's craftsmanship and creativity as a milliner.

Overall, I was thoroughly impressed by the presentation and the collection. Keep up the great work Abigail!

He was one of my fashion idols and I have been following his career since I first discovered him (I was in college watching Style Channel's Fashion TV, remember when the Style Channel used to be about "Style"??). His collections were always daring and creative with a distinct vision and extremely well-tailored. I've been going back and revisting elements of my childhood and thus understanding why I am so obsessed with color. Popples was one of my favorite toys and cartoon, I even had Popples sheets as a kid. Their paws and ears were heart shapped and "Popples Make You Smile." Awww. I forgot about them until my recent trip to Tokyo. Tokyo makes you remember a lot of things you may have forgot about, especially toy wise. If you had it as a kid they have it for sale in one of their many vintage toy shops. There is also tons of new Popples merchandise all over Tokyo (I ended up buying a wallet, don't judge me). Check out the faces in the boat

The fish boy isn't really a fish boy, he's wearing a mask!

This mural isn't brand new it was done in July 2009 by Brazilian graffiti artists Os Gemeos. For some reason I really didn't LOOK at it until after the New Year. The detail in this mural is indescribable. Its a trippy dream sequence complete with a boat that's made of faces and overturned stacked houses. The colors are so vibrant with various shades of yellow being the dominant colors. One of the most interesting parts of this piece is they created most of the clothing patterns with stencils. Its all about the DETAILS. If you are in NYC and are walking by the corner of Bowery and Houston my advice is to pause for 5 mins, its time well spent.

Fashion Icon: Isabella Blow

Today's fashion icon is British-born Isabella Blow. Blow, the stylist and fashion editor that is credited with discovering Alexander McQueen, and model Sophie Dahl. She was also the muse to hat designer Phillip Treacy (a lot of his work is in the collage above). A former assistant to both Anna Wintour and André Leon Talley at Vogue, she eventually became the fashion director of Tatler. Career aside, her style was outrageous! Her extravagant hats were her trademark as well as her wild ensembles. Like this one:

I made friends with Hiroshi after visiting his store Radd Lounge my first week in Tokyo. The shop is in the cut in Shibuya which made discovering it that much sweeter. I was really impressed by the visual displays and the lines that Radd carries. Designer Inspiration: Juicy Couture

"How can you be inspired by tracksuits Chay?" Just wait I'm going to tell you! I'm on this wacky sleep schedule having just come from Tokyo and so I've been up in the middle of the night reading tons of random (often fashion related) articles on the internet. I came across this article in the NY Times "Profile in Style: The Juicy Girls" and I thought it was very inspiring and wanted to share some interesting tidbits:

1. Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy the designers and best friends that wake up at 6:30 am everyday, they drive to work together and work a few feet from each other. Must be love :).

2. Started Juicy Couture as a maternity jeans line in 1996 - 13 years later they have a menswear line (Juicy Men), a new womenswear line (Bird), accessories, fragrances, a Maclaren stroller and a canine line.

3. They started the company with $200 - during the early part of 2008 they sold $258 million in merchandise. (Source)

4. Smart product placement: To promote themselves they sent Madonna a sweatsuit with the word "Madge" embroidered on it. The rest is history.

What really drew me to research "how they did it" was two things I read in their profile I can personally relate to:

1. I am a "wacky thrift-store girl": "It blows our mind that Juicy is a part of popular culture. When we started out we were just wacky thrift-store girls." - Pamela Skaist-Levy

2. Starting a company with a little bit of $: They started with $200 look at them now.

Just another reminder that if you work hard, believe-in and enjoy what your doing it will pay off. I hope that anyone out there (like myself) starting a clothing line/ business got some inspiration to keep creating!
